Short answer
For a visit of a few hours, a city garage usually costs less than P1 or P2 street parking: 190–280 kr for the first hour, then 140–150 kr. The catch: garages are open 7:00–24:00, so check you can get your car out when you need it.

Garage or street? The numbers
The common belief is that garages are the expensive option. During paid hours, the opposite is often true:
| Stay | P1 | P2 | P3 | Garage (190/140) | Garage (280/150) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | 660 | 240 | 240 | 190 | 280 |
| 2 hours | 1 320 | 480 | 480 | 330 | 430 |
| 4 hours | — | 960 | 620 | 610 | 730 |
| 8 hours | — | 1 920 | 900 | 1 170 | 1 330 |
Prices in krónur, assuming the whole stay is within street paid hours. P1 has a 3-hour maximum.
So: for up to about four hours, a garage is usually the cheapest central option — and it's dry. For a full day, P3 wins. In the evening and on weekends, free street parking beats everything.
The opening-hours catch
City garages are open from 7:00 to 24:00. If you plan to stay out late, or leave very early, make sure you'll be able to drive out. In September 2026 the city approved plans to open its garages around the clock, with more camera surveillance and a 24-hour phone line; the date hasn't been announced yet. Follow the 2026 changes.
Garages charge for every hour the car is inside, day or night. That's why, overnight, a legal street space after paid hours is almost always cheaper. Overnight parking guide.
Garage-by-garage notes
Stjörnuport
In the cheaper price group, at the upper end of Laugavegur. The city lists accessible spaces and EV chargers here — useful if you drive an electric rental.
Vitatorg
Also in the cheaper group, on the eastern edge of downtown. A good default for Hverfisgata restaurants and the east side of the center.
Kolaport
The closest city garage to Harpa — about a three-minute walk. If you're going to a concert or arriving with luggage, this is usually the answer. Parking near Harpa.
Traðarkot
Right in the middle of downtown on Hverfisgata, close to many hotels. Convenient, in the higher price group.
City Hall
Underneath the City Hall by Tjörnin pond. Handy for the west side of downtown and the National Gallery area.
Vesturgata
On the Old Harbour side of downtown, close to the restaurants of Vesturgata and Mýrargata.
Bergstaðir
Monthly permits only. There's no short-term visitor parking here, so don't plan around it.
