Short answer
There's no visitor car park at the church. Skip the crowded spaces right in front and try Frakkastígur, Barónsstígur or Vitastígur — all three to five minutes away on foot. If the church is the start of a downtown walk, park lower down and walk up.
Best streets to try, in order
When paying for closeness makes sense
⛪ Church is the main stop
A short visit and the tower ride? A space close by is worth a few hundred krónur, especially in bad weather or with limited mobility.
🚶 Church is the first stop
If you'll walk down Skólavörðustígur to the shops afterwards, park lower down in a cheaper zone. You'll be walking that way anyway.
The approach that works: drive toward the church, and if the first spaces feel crowded or expensive, drop down a street or two before committing. Don't circle the square.
What it costs
A one-hour church visit costs 660 kr in a P1 space and 240 kr in P2 or P3. For two to four hours around the neighbourhood, P3 is the clear winner. On weekends, P3 and P4 streets are free all day — check the zone on the sign. Zone prices and hours.
