Short answer
Pay for street parking at the machine, on the city's website, or with an app — Parka, EasyPark, Verna or Síminn Pay. Whichever you use, take ten seconds to check the plate, zone and duration before you confirm.
Ways to pay
| Method | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Street pay machine | One-off stops, no app needed | You must return to extend |
| City website | Paying from your phone without installing anything | Enter the plate exactly |
| Parka | Icelandic app, widely used | Check the service fee |
| EasyPark | If you already use it at home | Service fee; check the zone it detects |
| Verna, Síminn Pay | Icelandic alternatives | Check your card is accepted |
Apps let you stop a session when you leave, so you only pay for the time you used, and extend it without walking back to the car.
The three checks that prevent most fines
- The plate. Rental car plates are easy to mistype. A wrong plate means no valid payment.
- The zone. The app picks a zone from your location. Make sure it matches the sign on your street.
- The duration. Check the session is running and long enough — and remember P1's 3-hour maximum.
Fines are no longer left on the windscreen in Reykjavík: they go to the car's owner. With a rental, you'll find out weeks later, with the rental company's admin fee on top. How fines work.
Garages and the airport
City garages charge on exit for the time spent inside — no app session needed. At Keflavík airport, number-plate recognition charges you automatically; pay within 48 hours through Autopay, Parka or EasyPark to avoid a 1,490 kr service fee. Airport parking guide.
