Guide · Fines

Reykjavík parking fines: what they cost and how they reach you.

Short answer

Forgetting to pay costs 4,500 kr. Parking where it's forbidden costs 10,000 kr. There's no ticket on the windscreen any more: the charge goes to the car's owner, so with a rental car it arrives weeks later — plus the rental company's admin fee.

How a fine reaches you

Reykjavík stopped putting tickets under windscreen wipers. When a parking attendant registers a charge, it's sent to the car's registered owner through the Icelandic government portal and their online bank.

If you're driving your own Icelandic car, you'll see it there. If you're driving a rental, the rental company is the owner: it pays or forwards the charge and normally bills it to your card with an administration fee. That's why many visitors only discover a Reykjavík parking fine after they're home.

Think the fine is wrong?

You can ask for the charge to be reviewed within 28 days of the date it was issued. The request is made by the car's owner — with a rental, contact the rental company quickly and send them your proof (an app receipt or a photo of the sign). Keep app receipts until your trip is over.

How to avoid one

  1. Check the plate, zone and duration before confirming in an app. Paying & apps.
  2. Remember P1's 3-hour maximum, even if you keep paying.
  3. After a free night, start paying when the paid hours begin — 9:00 on weekdays in most zones.
  4. Never stop on a pavement or near a crossing "for a minute": that's the 10,000 kr charge.

Keflavík airport is different

Airport parking isn't a fine: number-plate cameras record your stay and you pay afterwards. Pay within 48 hours through Autopay, Parka or EasyPark, or a 1,490 kr service fee is added. Airport parking guide.
